Although sign language was developed for the Deaf community, signs can be used with children with language delay and disorder. Signs are meant to act as a "bridge" to verbal communication. Sign language, like verbal language, is a symbolic system. This separates language from gestures or nonspecific vocalizations. Once a child learns the power of symbolic communication through sign, communication skills often blossom, and verbal language may start to emerge.
